Question 1: What is the most rewarding aspect of working as a Technician?
Seeing people enjoy the work you have helped create.
 
Question 2: What are the key skills required to be an effective Technician?
This does depend on the area you work in, skills relevent for your area of expertice. Also a level of inginuity and a lot of paitence.
 
Question 3: Do you see your role as a natural step on a career ladder, and if so what is the next rung?
It is a step on a career ladder - on one path, or it could be the career some people want to end up in. Personally it is a rung to moving into a more specialised field.
 
Question 4: How did you work your way into your current role?
I did an HND technical theatre course, then did a few freelance style jobs until i found out about / got this job.
 
Question 5: How much do you think networking helps towards landing a job in the industry?
A lot! I heard about my current job through a friend, the more you work with people the more likely they will pass work your way in the future.
 
Question 6: Do you think you will be working in the industry in the next five years, and if so in what capacity?
Yes, most likely general technician in education / theatre areas.
 
Question 7: Please describe what a typical day working as a Technician might contain?
Open up the theatre. Read emails if time. If a get-in day start rigging or setting up etc, followed by tech, dress and run. If not a show day then start on building and equipment maintenance jobs, or making props / specials for productions.
 
Question 8: Have you done any additional training courses to further your career?
ABTT Silver Stage Technician course. Just FX Pyrotechnics awareness course.
 
Question 9: How important is working for free at the beginning of your career?
Getting experience through voluntry work is very useful, getting to know people in the industry and getting to know hoe the business actually works.
